VSim Modeling of Plasma Thrusters to Be Presented at the 68th International Astronautical Conference

Boulder, Colorado - August 17, 2017:

Mr. Alexander Ryan from the University of New South Wales, Australia will present results of his research using VSim to model plasma thrusters.

Particle-in-Cell algorithms capture the kinetic behavior of complex interactions between ions within plasma thrusters. 2D PIC simulations of plasma ion acceleration through a magnetic nozzle were performed with VSim. Simulations that determine whether plasma detachment occurs may be used in the optimization of magnetic nozzle designs for small to large scale plasma-dynamic thrusters. The ability to accurately simulate innovations by using codes such as VSim before prototyping devices is essential for improving the overall efficiency of electric thrusters.

The research is scheduled for presentation at Session 6 of the Space Propulsion Symposium at International Astronautical Congress 2017 in Adelaide, Australia, which is to be held September 25-30.
